Now that the holiday season is upon us, it’s time to dust off that old, trusty suit, ready for a stint on the party circuit. The dilemma with a suit however, is maintaining the balance between a smart, sophisticated look and something a little more festive without falling into the “fancy dress” category.

It’s true that, as an investment piece for most, men could face this issue for at least 4 or 5 years, but that doesn’t have to be the case.

Formal dressing has come into its own over the past few seasons. Shows like Mad Men have pushed the art of tailoring to the top of men’s fashion agenda, with celebrities like George Lamb, Jude Law and Dermot O’Leary all advocates for the modern day suit. The recession too, has left people yearning for fonder memories of the past, thus the Heritage trend was born, encompassing the classic, dandy style of the first half of the century, in which the men’s suit reigned supreme.

The influence of mens fashion has undoubtedly grown over the past 10 years with men demanding more from their clothes. Innumerable options of fabrics, threads, lapels and linings mean men have more options than ever before when it comes to choosing their first tux, or indeed, updating their favourite black suit.

Waistband:

Men’s underwear has 3 types of waistband.

- Encased elastic waistband
- The sewn inside elastic waistband
- The sewn on elastic waistband    

Encased elastic waistband is mostly found in boxers. Elastic is threaded through the casing and causes the boxer fabric to gather. This would be best for men who are allergic to latex. But major disadvantage is it leaves vertical red imprints on the body.
In sewn inside elastic waistband, elastic is exposed to the body. It does not leave red imprint marks on the body.

The sewn on elastic waistband is mostly found in briefs. It is very comfortable for the body and leaves very less red marks on the body. Several manufacturers are making their elastic waistbands with microfiber or having the inside brushed.

The fly:    

Only 20% men prefer fly. Majority of men simply go up and over. That’s why fly is mostly preferred as a decoration item than a functional feature. Whether men use it or not, fly will always be a stock feature on men’s boxers. Boxer briefs and trunks will have a brief style fly treatment.

Inseam:

Lot of design changes have occurred between a man’s legs. For increased comfort and improved fit, there is less of traditional intersecting of back, front and leg seams in the crotch area. Instead gussets and panels are becoming popular, and are very comfortable.
